We Design for Life – Designing a Municipality

Tuesday 30 May at 13.30-17.00

Design has become a major game changer within Kolding, its business community, democracy, and city life. Since the establishment of Design School Kolding 50 years ago, the school and the city have had close bonds, however in 2012, the local government decided that design should no longer just be the icing on the cake; now it was going to be the cake bottom – the foundation, and We Design for Life became the city motto. Kolding wanted to be more than the city with the best motorway crossing and the cheapest business land. The change happened and still happens in close collaboration with the school, which has extended its focus from arts and crafts to also including design thinking and strategic design. E.g. over 500 small and medium-sized companies have participated in courses at the school and learned to apply design. The local government has set up a secretariat to consolidate the strategy focusing also on user-driven innovation and welfare. Indeed, Kolding has become a design city.

Now, the city of Kolding would like to invite you on a tour that highlights examples of local design driven innovation focusing on health and social impact. Head of Design Ulrik Jungersen will begin by giving you some background on the context, including the Danish welfare model. (We reserve the right to make changes in the programme. Cases and speakers are yet to be confirmed, but Health and Social Impact will be the topics of the tour).
